1015 Guest House

Los Angeles
2025

Originally conceived as a pool pergola, the structure was absorbed into the domestic realm in the 1950s through its conversion into a guest house by Billy Haines. What began as an outdoor appendage became interior, a shift that blurred the boundary between leisure, architecture, and habitation.

Office LOG proposes a Wellness Extension that operates less as an addition than as a reprogramming. A gym, sauna, and spa are organized around a new courtyard that functions as connective tissue, linking garden and interior while reexposing the project’s latent relationship to the landscape. The courtyard is not decorative; it is infrastructural, a spatial hinge that reorders circulation, light, and use.

In parallel, the existing structure is restored and renovated, not as a nostalgic exercise, but as an act of clarification. Billy Haines’ original design is treated as an operative framework rather than a historical artifact: its logic reinforced, its spatial intelligence made legible again. The project oscillates between preservation and transformation, allowing past and present programs to coexist without hierarchy.
